James Whitchurch Wins Award

Awards Success for TrainFX Engineering Apprentice

This week at TrainFX, we’ve been celebrating the achievements of one of our youngest and brightest … James Whitchurch.

James has worked incredibly hard, both academically at Derby College as well as developing and using his engineering skills at TrainFX. He quickly excelled at working across various development projects with us, further honing his skills in system design and became an integral part of the Engineering team at TrainFX. His attitude toward his work and aptitude for learning are second to none.

We are proud to announce that James’ hard work has paid off and he has been awarded the winner for both the Engineering Award and Student of the Year for the 2019 Peak Awards!

James began his journey on his apprenticeship through TrainFX and Derby College back in 2016. First completing his level 3 BTEC then progressing on to his Foundation Degree followed by his final year to achieve his BEng in Systems Engineering.

This is an amazing achievement for James to win both awards from a strong group of approx. 20,000 students across the group of colleges and universities in the East Midlands region. It is an achievement that everyone at TrainFX is very proud of – proving you to not need to be a large OEM to offer an apprenticeship that helps a student excel and acheive their full potential.

“I’m personally very proud to have been at the beginning of James’s journey into work”, explains Andy Wakefield, Operations Manager at TrainFX who is also James’ Manager and Mentor. “We are lucky to have such a capable and ambitious young man in the early stages of his career and we are excited to see what this young man can achieve with TrainFX into the future”.

TrainFX 2018 Review

As we approach the end of the year, we are already gearing up for next year!  But before we share all the exciting challenges we’re looking forward to in 2019, there is much to look back on in 2018…

After a successful trial for Hefei City Metro System in the Anhui region of China, TrainFX have commenced supply of a bespoke Passenger Information System for 48 x 6 car sets which will run on the Hefei Metro line 2 in 2019.

Improvements

This year we’ve started making improvements throughout our entire manufacturing process.

In addition to investing in new storage infrastructure, the construction of new PCB testing facilities as well as constructing a new programming test booth, we now have all new test bays well under construction and are actively improving and increasing capacity in this area as well as reviewing and making further improvements to our test processes. This means we are doubling our development allowing an even better capability and capacity for our customers during the all important testing phase and throughout the service lifetime.

To compliment this and meet the growing demands of our industry, we’ve also expanded our workforce this year, especially in our production department.

We’ve recently welcomed new members of staff in the warehouse, strengthening the workforce there, so we’ve now also brought in additional support in a team leader position to liaise between production manager and manufacturing department.

New ISO Standards

Our QHSE Manager, Martin Lyons led on adopting the very latest ISO standards, having recently completed the Lloyds approved Internal Auditor course. In addition, our Operations Manager, Andy Wakefield, who also completed the Auditor course, has attained new certifications as an IEng (Incorporated Engineer) and CMgr (Chartered Manager).  Andy has also been working hard to put in place new internal training schemes, which help support the development of our team and efficiency of our processes!

Together with successful shows over in Berlin, Germany for Innotrans as well as right here in our back yard for RVE 2018, it truly has been a great year to look back on!
